Whanau Conference Term 3 2015

This Term was my first Whanau Conference that I held as a Beginning Teacher. It was a great learning experience for me as times have changed. I have seen and been used to where the teacher leads the parent interviews where as today they are lead by the students in 3 way parent teacher student conferences. Before the teacher would feedback on the student where as now the conference is lead by the student and they feedback their goals and learning to their parents.

I believe that this form of reporting back to the parents is more effective from what I have observed from the other teachers as well as seen. This conferencing process enables the children to be more actively involved in their learning and reporting process.

Before the Whanau conferences took place I conferenced with my reading and maths and writing groups and we sat down and set our goals for term 3 and 4.
I sat down with the children and as a group we looked through together assessment analysis as well as their mid year reports and from their the children devised their new learning goals on their Digital presentations.

My role during the conference was more of a facilitator where I guided and supported the children where needed. This form of reporting back to the Whanau was I feel effective as it focuses on the learner and their growth as a learner. This in turn I personally believe grows independent learners.

Being a new teacher to Room 7, though I was a .6 teacher before and the parents have seen me around school. This gave me an opportunity to get to know the parents and the parents to also feel comfortable and get me know me as their child's new teacher.

Student-led conferences and three-way conferences are designed to achieve one or more of the following goals:
  • to help students demonstrate evidence of learning
  • to teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation
  • to facilitate the development of students' organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence
  • to encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue
  • to encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning
  • to increase parent understanding of their child’s learning through improving attendance at and satisfaction with the reporting process.

Overall, I had great feedback from the Whanau's present and was very pleased at how the night ended. I was also proud at the effort that the children put into their goal presentations as well as the effort and confidence in presenting them to their families. It was also great to see families come to the Whanau conferences and take an active role in their children's learning.

Manaiakalani Hui Term 3 2015

On Friday the 21st of August Tamaki Primary School had a Teachers only day. As part of the Teachers only day all of the Tamaki Primary teachers attended the Annual Manaiakalani Hui which was held at the Pamnure Yacht clubs. It was a great atmosphere to be surrounded by our neighbouring schools whom are also part of the Manaiakalani cluster.

The session began with students from various schools sharing their learning and how they chose to digitally present their learning in various ways. I found this very beneficial.Being a new digital immersion teacher and a beginning teacher it was great to see the different app's that the children used to present their information and learning to the world.

Secondly, we had presentations from different Innovative teachers from a range of schools in the cluster. These are teachers that focus on an Inquiry topic in regards to learning in a digital environment.

Some of the aspects of the Hui that caught my attention was the range of app's that can be used in the classroom to meet the needs of children as well as engage the children in their learning. Some of these App's were:

  • Explain everything-Where children record themselves explaining how they go about doing something. For example if they were doing Maths word problems in the classroom they woulc be able to use explain everything to be able explain their thinking and how they solved the problem and what strategy they used.
  • Video Screen casts-Where you can talk in the background but demonstrate how to use an app etc.
  • Go Animate
  • Google draw-To draw characters from a book if they are doing a character study etc.
  • Rainbow tools
  • imovie- To create movies, presentations.
  • Padlet- in a group setting where even though children are on different devices they can still onn contribute their ideas to one big central idea.
In our table group we reflected on how we felt about the range of digital learning happening and this is what we discussed and came up with as a group:

·      REFLECTION: We can see the change that is happening from books to Learn, Create Share.  Sharing: This gave us an opportunity to see a range of different apps that the other cluster schools are using and gives us a goal to use variety of apps and implement them into our own classrooms. Its great to see what the other schools are doing and this is how they go about doing it. It opened the space for learning not only from classroom but also from the cluster of schools. We as a school have been sharing our strategies with other schools and visiting schools but we also need an opportunity to have a look at what the neighbouring schools are doing.

One particular presentation from Jason Borland, Physical Education Teacher from Tamaki  Collage was his theory that" You can't help yourself until you see yourself". I was amazed and fascinated as to the way that used Video as a form of vital feedback to assist in skills development and performance. I loved the way he used the app- which I am not familiar with but willing to learn more about was Vidalyze- Which is a cloud based app where children can draw lines, angels etc on the video and point out the areas which need development. I was also amazed at how he used Video Delay software on an Ipad which is set up on the gym to record the children and the image is projected using apply TV. This gave the children an opportunity to watch their movement in an instant reply situation. This he used as part of his teaching pedagogy.

At the Hui they also talked about Talking points: Used to push the learning forward. Below I have included a description from the notes that I took.

Talking points: Use to push the learning forward.

Engagement
Conversations
Tasks
Support
Connections
Pockets or promise: Learning at home
How is what they are learning at school helping at home

1.    Engagement: Engaging at home/learning based activities at home.
2.    Above the line tasks- Extension, invention, explanation, interaction, researching, exploration, re-imaging, sharing, catching up, finishing off. (Things they were asked to do that were above and beyond)
3.    INDEPENDENT LEARNING STRATEGIES: Able to manage themselves where time was used well for learning: self management skills, connective skills, time management, ability to collaborate well with others. How to push themselves.
4.    Parental support:  Talking, commenting, asking, teaching, sharing, dialogue, reviewing, comparing, explaining , expert.Child teaches parent what they learnt in the classroom. Being asked to explain their thinking to their parents and teaching their parents how things went in the classroom
5.    Disposition: Students at home were creative curious enthusiastic, ability to read the world through what they were learning (independent pursuit)

Sustaining the process:
Ongoing analysis of data
Ongoing processes of self improvement
Shared goals
Collective problem solving
Understanding variation.

Embedding and sustaining the processes: Using the groundwork, foundations, hypothesis, writing promise and learning at home.

That is what makes Maniakalani a learning cluster.

What I have taken from the Hui:

  1. A variety of Apps that I could use in my classroom.
  2. With the engagement comes the learning and application of the knowledge learnt- To create DLO's that engage children in their learning as well as extend their thinking, problem solving skills.
  3. Leaning with others and thinking about how I can make learning/teaching more innovative
  4.  Continue adapting how we are using those apps pedagogically. Having more learning conversations-Across the School.  Learning with our children and alongside our children.

Overall, the Hui was very informative. It gave me a great opportunity to be able to conserve with other teachers and learners from around the clusters and see what they are doing in their classrooms.

What does Peaceful Play look like.

Our topic for Inquiry for Term 3 is "Practicing Peaceful Play".  As a class we have been looking at what  Peaceful play looks like. The children peer/shared their ideas about what it looked like to them and then in their peers they shared their ideas to the class.

The children then went onto creating a DLO (Digital learning object) mind map where they entered their ideas. They then shared their DLO's onto their personal blogs.
Below I have included some of the children's work.
DLO Created by Siale and Demetrius Rm7

Some of the questions asked were: What does peaceful play involve? What does peaceful play look like to you? How could you show peaceful play?

DLO Created by Sahil and Curtys Rm7

DLO created by Kenneth and Alo Rm7

I was amazed at how many different key words that the children came up with in regards to what Peaceful Play looks like and how they could show it. They did a great job!!

The Incredible years Teachers Programme.

In Week 2 myself and another colleague attended our first Incredible years Teachers Programme. It was a fantastic day where I got to meet wonderful teachers from different walks of life as well as  experiences from different schools come together. Below I have included a Video about what the Incredible Years Teachers programme looks like. It has surely been an insightful experience for myself and I am surely looking forward to many more sessions to come.

Some of the questions we talked about as a team were:
1: What are these children with difficult behaviours like in class?
2:   How do you think these children feel about themselves?
3:   How do children feel and behave towards these students?
4:Why is it difficult to get to know these children?

In reflection on the things that I leant during my first IYT session as well as guidance from my mentor and reading I have applied this knowledge and started to build better relationships with the students in my class.  I have found that the children;s behaviour has decreased as well as they are more motivated and inspired to learn more in the classroom. I have also built better relationships where the children feel safe in the classroom and feel happy to come to school everyday. I have also built trust with the children where they are coming to me more and opening up and talking more to me about what is upsetting them and they feel comfortable in my presence and talking to with. They are more emotionally connected in themselves.

I am definitely looking forward to my other IYT sessions to come.
